Farm and Food Discovery Centre More Interactive and Curriculum Focussed

Farmscape for May 17, 2017

The Manager of the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre says, in keeping with the facility's focus on capturing the attention of school aged children, the centre has become more interactive and developed curriculum based programming.
The University of Manitoba's Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre was opened six years ago to help tell the story of the food we eat from the farm to the consumers' plate.
Centre Manager Myrna Grahn says exhibits have been updated, adding technology to make the displays more interactive and curriculum has been developed that meets the needs of what the schools are offering.

Clip-Myrna Grahn-University of Manitoba:
We have our staff that have gone through the curriculum so that we can meet the needs of teachers but the curriculum can cover insects, it can cover food, it can cover sustainable agriculture.
In the grade ten geography class we have a specific program that will meet the needs of those classes and what the teachers are offering so that they can come here and get a hands on experience.
We will work with our industry partners so that they can come in also and present parts of those curriculum, so it's not just our staff that are teaching the different components.
We'll do a dairy program where they tour the dairy barn and then they'll make ice cream.
We have a potato science program and they'll make potato pancakes.
We always try to link it to some type of food production so that they see how the crops grow or how the hens lay eggs.
Then we actually make something with the eggs or with the grains.
We'll bake bread with them, we'll do science experiments but also it links to health and nutrition of the food that you're choosing to eat.

Grahn estimates 3,000 to 4,000 students from schools as far away as Russell, Fisher Branch, or Shilo have visited the centre over the past year.
